Origins

Tobacco comes from North America, and it was in wide use by the tribes that lived here long before European settlers showed up. At this point in time, tobacco had many different uses. Though it has Many ritual uses as well as it was an extendedly identified as trade good. Tobacco could be piped, masticated, or even transformed into a juice and drank, so it commands money, as something wherein a transaction is clinched. It is also used in religious rites. Several North American peoples believed that tobacco was a gift from the Creator and that the smoke was a way to convey thoughts and prayers to the divine forces.

Recreational Uses

During the 1500's, the first European settlers in the New World were quick to export tobacco to Europe, where it quickly became a fad.

Several Native American groups believed that tobacco had been given to them by the Creator as a gift; the smoke was a vehicle by which prayers could be conveyed to the heavens. Once tobacco became a cash crop--especially in the South, where it was a major crop-- immigration to the new world increased dramatically.

Tobacco, a labor-intensive crop, increased the demand for African slave labor. By the 1600s, the slave population had swelled to the point where tobacco could be grown regularly and reliably. Because it was so profitable, tobacco was known for many years as "brown gold."

How Tobacco Has Been Used

Tobacco has been used in many different ways throughout its history. Of course, modern people are familiar with its use in cigarettes, where dried tobacco is smoked, but you'll find that it is also used as a moist powder known as snus, which can deliver the same feelings as smoking a cigarette would.
